This is a Cover Feature essay of KLN Vol. 59. Under the theme of “A Mourning Against Mourning,” critic Sung Hyunah explores how Korean literature has preserved “counter-memory,” defying the misappropriated and selective mourning for the deaths of others. Through literary works such as Han Kang’s We Do Not Part and Seong Haena’s “Oz,” this essay highlights the possibility of a broader sense of mourning that goes beyond the collective notion of “we.”
