Lee Seong-bok’s poetry evokes events and landscapes unfolding above a horizon of unlimited interpretive possibilities. As Kim Hyeon stated of Lee Seong-bok’s poetry, "It vastly expands its meaning to permit endless questions, not only on an individual or private level, but on a collective and public one as well." Lee has attracted attention for his imaginative and multi-layered poetry which features European influences including Baudelaire, Kafka and Nietzsche and often attacks the corruption, hypocrisy and perversion of the modern world. Lee's poetry suggests that all things exist in relation to other things, and that there is no core or isolated act. All binary categories—the collective versus individual or the social versus the ontological—are simultaneously one. But Lee’s poetry does not deny opposition itself. Rather, through such distinctions, his poetic world reads more dynamically, and represents the overcoming of life's pain with the strength gained through the exchange of meanings from opposing categories.

 

Nach seinem Eintritt in die Marine 1973 las er systematisch die wichtigen Werke der Literatur und beteiligt sich an zahlreichen Literaturwettbewerben für Jungautoren. Nach seiner Entlassung vom Militärdienst begann Lee Seong-bok mit dem Studium der französischen Literatur, traf auf Dichter wie Hwang Ji-u und organisierte auf dem Campus Bilderausstellungen mit Lyrik. 1977 veröffentlichte Lee Seong-bok auf Empfehlung des damaligen Professors für französische Literatur und einflussreichen Literaturkritikers Kim Hyeon Liebgewordenes Dirnenviertel und weitere Gedichte in der Literaturzeitschrift „Munhak Kwa Jisung“ (Literatur und Intellekt) und macht sich so als Dichter einen ersten Namen. 1979 nahm er ein Magisterstudium auf. 1980, in den Wirren des Volksaufstandes von Gwangju, heiratet er Kim Hye-ran. Im selben Jahr wird das Erscheinen zweier bedeutender Literaturzeitschriften „Munhak Kwa Jisung“ und „Changjakkwa Bipyeong“ (Literarisches Schaffen und Kritik) durch die neue Militärregierung zwangseingestellt. Im Oktober wird Lee Seong-boks erster Gedichtband Wann erwacht der Stein aus seinem trägen Schlummer publiziert, mit dem er 1982 den Kim Su Young-Literaturpreis gewann. Im gleichen Jahr trat er eine Stelle als Dozent an der Keimyeong-Universität in Daegu an, wo er Kreatives Schreiben lehrt. Ein Studienaufenthalt in Frankreich von 1984 bis 1985 ließ ihn seine durch Franz Kafka und Charles Baudelaire inspirierte westliche Ausrichtung überdenken. Nach seiner Rückkehr begann er, sich der Lektüre der ostasiatischen Klassiker zu widmen. 1991 erhielt er durch Mittel der Yeonam-Stiftung die Möglichkeit zu einem weiteren einjährigen Studienaufenthalt in Paris, eine Zeit in der Lee Seong-bok sich vom Konfuzianismus abwandte und unter dem Einfluss des Taoismus und Buddhismus die westliche Literatur für sich wiederentdeckte.

 

Su poesía evoca sucesos y paisajes desplegando un horizonte de ilimitadas posibilidades de interpretación. Kim Hyeon describió así su poesía: "Expande su significado para permitir preguntas infinitas, no solo de forma individual y privada, sino también de forma pública y colectiva".4Ha llamado la atención por su poesía imaginativa que tiene influencias europeas, incluyendo a Baudelaire, Kafka y Nietzsche, y a menudo ataca la corrupción, la hipocresía y la perversión del mundo moderno.5Su poesía propone que todas las cosas existen en relación con las otras y que no hay acciones aisladas. Todas las categorías binarias, como lo colectivo y lo individual o lo social y lo ontológico, son simultáneamente una. Pero su poesía no deniega la oposición en sí misma sino que, a través de tales distinciones, su mundo poético es más dinámico y representa la superación del dolor de la vida con la fuerza que se consigue a través del intercambio de sentidos de las categorías opuestas.

 

Yi Seong-bok évoque dans sa poésie des événements et des paysages dont l'interprétation peut être réalisée de plusieurs manières. Kim Hyeon a déclaré au sujet de sa poésie : « Dans chaque poème, il élargit considérablement l'éventail des interprétations pour permettre aux lecteurs de s'interroger longuement, à la fois sur lui-même en tant que personne mais aussi en tant que membre d'un collectif »3.Il a attiré l'attention du public avec sa poésie imaginative et métissée qui comporte des influences européennes, dont Baudelaire, Kafka et Nietzsche. À travers ses poésies, il s'en prend notamment à la corruption des politiques, à l'hypocrisie et aux perversions du monde moderne4.Sa poésie suggère que toutes les choses existent les unes par rapport aux autres et qu'il n'y a pas d'acte isolé. Toutes les relations binaires, le collectif face à l'individuel, le social par rapport à l'existentiel, ne sont qu'un. Mais sa poésie ne nie pas pour autant l'opposition elle-même. Au contraire, grâce à ces distinctions, son monde poétique se lit de manière dynamique, et représente un appel au dépassement de la douleur avec la force acquise par l'intersection des sens des catégories opposées.

 

1952年6月4日、慶尚北道尚州市に生まれる。ソウル大学校仏語仏文学科と同大学院修士、博士課程を終えた。1977年、『文学と知性』に『정든 유곽에서(慣れ親しんだ遊郭で)』を発表し登壇した。李の詩は、突出した想像力と意外性で注目を浴びてきた。最初発表された詩で豊富な自由連想のイメージで人々を驚かせた李は、2番目の詩集『남해 금산(南海錦山)』で熱い恋のすばらしい境地を見せることで多くの読者を感動させた。李は繊細で平易な言葉で現代の精神的危機を詠う詩人だと評価されている。現在、啓明大学校文芸創作学科教授。
