후배로부터 공선옥의 이야기를 들었던 것은 여러 달 전의 일이다. 최근에 읽은 책들 중 가장 인상적이었다는 독후감에도 불구하고, 가난한 사람들의 신산한 삶을 소설로까지 접하고 싶지는 않다는 생각을 마음 한켠에 품고 있었는지 차일피일 미루다가, 조금은 밀린 숙제를 하는 심정으로 손에 들게 되었다.
