Obra publicada quince años después de su primer libro, consta de cinco relatos que se relacionan entre sí y que giran en torno a la pobreza tanto material como espiritual en la época contemporánea. Los capítulos del libro: “Ambiente invernal”, “Canción amorosa de Garibong”, “La risotada”, “El país azul en el mar del sur” y “El mar lejano”, hablan de la vida de los campesinos y la destrucción paulatina de la sociedad agrícola ante la creciente industrialización, la pérdida de valores aparejada a la pobreza que los persigue y que perciben como un gran castigo. Los vínculos familiares se rompen con frecuencia debido a maridos alcoholizados y violentos, ancianos enfermos, madres desesperadas e hijos rebeldes que tienen como denominador común y única obsesión conseguir dinero, y para obtenerlo se ven obligados a deambular interminablemente con el objeto de sobrevivir.
