Yong-Tae Min (born 1943) is a South Korean poet and scholar of Spanish literature.
Life
Yong-Tae Min was born in Hwasun, South Jeolla province. He studied Spanish literature at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and earned his Ph.D in Spanish literature from Complutense University of Madrid. He has translated works of Spanish literature into Korean and has written and published Spanish poems of his own. He was professor of Spanish literature at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies from 1979 to 1986, and at Korea University from 1987 to 2008. He was inducted into the Royal Spanish Academy in 2009, and has served as vice president of PEN Korea. Since 2004, he has served as consultant editor of the monthly Munhak Vatang. He is currently professor emeritus at Korea University and dedicates himself to writing poetry and translation.
Writing
Yong-Tae Min made his literary debut in 1968, publishing four poems including "Bameuroui jageop" (밤으로의 작업 Night Work) in the quarterly Changbi. Among his best-known poems are "Hwanghonui jeolgyu" (황혼의 절규 Scream at Dusk), "Geombul" (검불 Bracken), and "Pirami naksitkkun" (피라미 낚싯꾼 Minnowing). His poetry collections include Siganui son (시간의 손 The Hand of Time), Sibisi (시비시 Right and Wrong Poems), Pureosseugi (풀어쓰기 To Put it Simply), Siotgwa jieut sai (ᄉ과 ᄌ사이 Between ㅅand ㅈ), and Namu nabi nara (나무 나비 나라 Tree, Butterfly, Country).
Works such as "Nae sideuri eodil ganna" (내 시들이 어딜 갔나 Where Did My Poems Go) reveal the poet's preoccupation with his writing and playful imagination. Min makes use of the trivial details of everyday life, reconstructing memories from his childhood and otherwise directly in his poetry. Recognizing that poetry lies within his memories, Min turns to his hometown in search of memories of his mother. With a light touch that resembles sketches, the difficulty of writing is depicted through free association and lively meter.
Min has also published critical essays such as "Kkumsogeseo mannan dongseoui jaehoe" (꿈속에서 만난 동서의 재회 East and West Reunited in a Dream), (20세기 초에 만난 서구문학과 동양사상 The Meeting of Western Literary Theory and Eastern Philosophy in the Early 20th Century), and "Uimieopseumgwa uimi bakkui uimi" (의미없음과 의미 밖의 의미 Meaninglessness and Meaning Outside of Meaning), and published numerous volumes of literary theory including Seo, jungnammi munhangnon (서, 중남미 문학론 Introduction to Hispanic Literature) and Seoyang munhak sogui dongyang (서양 문학 속의 동양 The East in Western Literature). He has also translated Don Quixote into Korean, a task that took the better part of a decade, and translated the works of Korean poets such as Kim Jong-gil, Kim Chunsu, Hwang Ji-U, and Choi Seung-Ho into Spanish, contributing to the development of Korean literature in translation.
민용태(1943~)는 대한민국의 시인이다.
생애
민용태는 1943년 전남 화순에서 태어났다. 고향 화순에서 초, 중등학교를 졸업하고 한국외국어대학에서 서반아문학을 전공한 후, 스페인 마드리드국립대에서 국가박사학위를 취득했다.
스페인어 문학 작품을 번역하고, 스페인어 창작 시집을 출간하는 등 대한민국에 스페인 문학을 널리 알리는 데 힘썼다. 한국외국어대학 교수(1979년~1986년)와 고려대학교 국제어문학부 서어서문학과 교수(1987년~2008년)를 지냈다. 스페인왕립 한림원 종신위원(2009년), 국제펜클럽 한국본부 부회장(2001년)을 역임했다. 2004년부터 월간 『문학바탕』의 상임고문을 맡고 있다. 현재는 고려대학교 명예교수로 있으며 다양한 시작활동과 번역활동을 하고 있다.
작품 세계
민용태는 1968년 『창작과비평』에 시 「밤으로의 작업」 등을 발표하며 문단에 등단하였다. 대표적인 시로 「황혼의 절규」, 「검불」, 「피라미 낚싯꾼」 등이 있고, 시집 『시간의 손』(1981), 『시비시』(1984), 『풀어쓰기』(1987), 『ㅅ과 ㅈ사이』(1994), 『나무 나비 나라』(2002) 등을 발간하였다.
시인은 「내 시들이 어딜 갔나」와 같은 시 쓰기를 주제로 한 작품들을 통해 시 쓰기에 관한 고민과 특유의 상상력을 드러낸다. 시인은 자질구레한 일상이나 삶의 흔적, 그리고 어린 시절을 가공하지 않고 시 속에서 그대로 재현해낸다. 시인은 추억 속에서 시가 있음을 발견하고 어머니와 어머니에 대한 기억이 묻혀 있는 고향을 찾아 시를 썼다. 얼핏 신변을 가볍게 스케치한 것처럼 보이는 시편들은 민용태 시의 특징이라고 할 수 있는 자유연상의 경쾌한 운율을 통해 시인의 고통과 시 쓰기의 어려움을 지루하지 않게 그려내고 있다.
한편 평론 「꿈속에서 만난 동서의 재회」(1981), 「20세기 초에 만난 서구문학과 동양사상」(1986), 「의미없음과 의미 밖의 의미」(1986) 등을 발표하였으며, 『서‧중남미 문학론』(1989), 『서양 문학 속의 동양』(2010) 등 다수의 문학연구서를 출간하였다.
또한 시인은 10여 년에 걸쳐 스페인의 대표적인 문학인 『돈 끼호테』(1~2)권을 완역하고 한국의 대표적 시인인 김종길, 김춘수, 황지우, 최승호 등의 시 작품을 외국어로 번역하는 등 한국번역문학 발전에 기여를 하고 있다.
