KIM SUN-WOO, geboren 1970 in Gangneung, Provinz Gangwon, studierte an der Gangneung-Universität Koreanisch auf Lehramt. 1996 debütierte sie mit zehn Gedichten in der renommierten Literaturzeitschrift „Kunstschaffen und Kritik“ (Changjakkwabipyong) und im Jahr 2000 mit dem Band „Wenn sich meine Zunge weigert, in meinem Mund eingesperrt zu sein“. Nach ihrem Lyrikerstling erhielt sie einen Förderpreis der Daesan-Kulturstiftung, mit dem sie ihren zweiten Band „Unter Pfirsichblüten eingeschlafen“ schrieb, der 2003 erschien und im Folgejahr 2004 mit dem 49. Hyundae-Munhak-Preis für zeitgenössische Literatur ausgezeichnet wurde. Die Autorin schloß sich der Lyrikgesellschaft „Sihim“ (Poetische Kraft) an, veröffentlichte in zahlreichen Literaturzeitschriften und schreibt eine Kolumne für die Tageszeitung Hankyoreh. 2007 erschien ihr dritter Lyrikband „Wer ist in meinem Körper eingeschlafen?“, für den sie den 9. Cheon-Sang-Byeong-Lyrikpreis erhielt. Ihre Gedichte wurden auch ins Japanische, Englische und Schwedische übersetzt Kim Sun-Woo überschreitet mit ihrem unverwechselbaren weiblichen Stil die Grenzen des Feminismus, weil für sie die Gebärmutter das Symbol des Körpers ist, der den Kreislauf vom Anfang und Ende des Lebens darstellt und in dem die Geheimnisse des Universums verborgen liegen. Sie versteht den Körper, in dem Lebende und Tote sowie der Alltag und das Göttliche verschmelzen, als einen Tempel. Ihre Gedichte entspringen buddhistischem Gedankengut. Throughout the twentieth century, few countries in Asia suffered more from foreign occupation, civil war, and international military conflict than Korea. The Colors of Dawn brings together the moving and powerful voices of over forty Korean poets from these turbulent years. From 1903 to 1945, the Japanese Empire occupied the Korean peninsula and instituted measures to annihilate the nation and its culture. After Japan's defeat in WWII, Korea became a killing ground during the Korean War (1950 to 1953). During this period and into the 1980s, South Korea was controlled by a military dictatorship, and today it remains on war footing. In the midst of internal and external conflicts, Korea's poets—threatened by the authorities with torture, imprisonment, and death—found ways to express their fierce desire for freedom and self-governance. Translating Feminisms showcases intimate collaborations and conversations between some of Asia's most exciting women writers and emerging-star translators: contemporary poetry of labour and language, alongside essays exploring how, where and by whom feminist writing and female bodies are translated. For us at Tilted Axis Press, feminist publishing means working against the fetishisation of 'oppression' and demands that authors explicitly subscribe to what white women recognise as feminism, or even foreground their femaleness in their work. We work towards ensuring that the women we publish have the creative agency to contextualise their own work, resisting the commodification and/or erasure of their femaleness on their own terms.
