Hwang Sok-yong escribió Bari. La princesa abandonada en 2006 en París, tras los atentados de Londres y los disturbios en las banlieues francesas. Cuenta Hwang (1943, Changchun) que un día se topó en Nueva York con el monumental libro de Sebastiao Salgado Exodos. “Allí estaba todo tipo de migraciones que están ocurriendo ahora. La única foto que le faltaba era la emigración de norcoreanos”, explica. La historia de Bari entrelaza las experiencias de una mujer que huye de la represión y del hambre en el país más hermético del mundo con el chamanismo de la la antiquísima mitología coreana. En aquella leyenda “ella también tuvo que ir al oeste, hasta el inframundo”.
