Two Korean writers (Ko Un and Lee Ho-cheo) were invited to participate in the 2003 Berlin International Literature Festival, where more than 100 writers from around the world are invited every year to hold over 200 readings and discussions across the city for two weeks. The two writers held three readings each over the course of a week in Berlin and held discussions on the trend of contemporary Korean literature with local literary critics. On September 14, at the main forum of the literature festival under the theme, "Drifting Continent,” poet Ko Un gave a keynote speech as a representative of Asian intellectuals, at a discussion with intellectuals from the Americas and Europe. In addition, the two writers held a reading of their works at the Korean Literature Night (September 16), which was part of the Asia-Pacific Week hosted by the city of Berlin.
