Yi Cho-nyon (1269-1343) was a sijo writer from the Goryeo era. When his criticism of King Chunghye’s hedonistic lifestyle went unheeded, Yi composed the sijo poem “Ihwae wolbaekago” (이화에 월백하고 The Moon Shines Serenely on the White Pear Blossoms), which metaphorically expresses one’s loyalty to one’s king. This poem is considered one of the most accomplished works of literature from among Goryeo-era sijo in terms of technique and expressed perspective.
