In the civil and government upheaval of the 1960s and 1970s in Korea, Kang-baek Lee began his distinguished playwriting career. He is perhaps best known as the premier writer of social commentary in the form of allegories in an effort to circumvent extremely strict censorship laws which were heavily enforced until 1989. However, Lee is not just an allegorist. He weaves Confucianism values throughout his works: affection between fathers and sons; justice; relationships between husbands and wives; deference to the elders; and trust. Through over forty works, Kang-baek Lee has played and continues to play a formidable role in South Korean theatre, but Western appreciation for his works has been limited to Europe. This present anthology introduces to an English-reading audience a playwright whose dedication to the truth could not be squashed by government censorship and whose imagination paved the path for many younger playwrights now at the forefront of South Korean theatre. This book provides insights into Kang-baek Lee as a person and the magnitude of his impact on Korean culture.

Aus dem Koreanischen von Kim Miy-He und Sylvia Brüsel Dieser Band präsentiert vier Dramen des bekannten südkoreanischen Theaterautors Lee Kang-Baek, die in den Jahren 1973 bis 1995 entstanden sind. In ganz unterschiedlicher Weise werden darin „historische“ Themen behandelt. Auch wenn das Titelstück „Es ist weit von Seoul nach Yongwol“ in der Regieanweisung die Gegenwart als Zeit der Handlung angibt, geht es hier in erster Linie darum, mit geradezu kriminalistischem Spürsinn auf der Grundlage einer entdeckten alten Handschrift die altkoreanische Geschichte vom Königsmord im gottverlassenen Yongwol in ihrer Wirkung auf die Gegenwart nachzuleben. Während der Jahre der Militärdiktatur entstand 1973 das Stück „Die Wächter“, das eine scheinbar groteske Situation schildert, eigentlich jedoch Machtausübung, Einschüchterung und Manipulation zum Thema hat. „Die Heirat“ entlarvt am Beispiel eines Heiratsschwindlers eine rein unter materiellen Gesichtspunkten operierende Gesellschaft. Es ist ein überaus lebendiges Stück, ein Bühnenspektakel im Sinne von Dario Fo. „Frühlingstage“ schließlich zeigt die Auflösung konfuzianistischer Familienideale, die Werte, Denkstrukturen und Probleme einer alten Kultur. Bei allen Texten handelt es sich um koreanische Theaterstücke aus einer ostasiatischen Tradition, die schon europäische Autoren wie Brecht oder Döblin anregte.
