도입부
조남주(1978~)는 한국의 소설가이다. 평범한 여성 김지영의 삶을 통해 한국의 성 불평등 현상을 고발한 《82년생 김지영》이 누적 판매부수 100만부를 돌파함으로써1) 밀리언셀러 작가로 등극했다. 르포를 연상시키는 사실적 에피소드와 위트 있는 문체로 주목 받았다. 스스로를 페미니스트로 호명하며 젠더 이슈와 관련한 소설을 꾸준히 발표하고 있다.
생애
1978년 서울 출생이다. 대학에서 사회학을 전공하고 10년간 시사 교양 프로그램 프리랜서 작가로 일했다. 결혼과 출산 때문에 휴직하며 전업주부가 되었다. 육아에만 전념해야 하는 생활에 염증을 느껴 집에서 소설을 쓰기 시작했다.2) 《귀를 기울이면》(2011)을 발표하며 데뷔했다.3)
4년 동안 공백기를 가진 뒤, 《고마네치를 위하여》(2016)로 황산벌문학상을 수상하며 두 번째 책을 출간했다. 서울 변두리 어느 달동네에 사는 한 가족의 이야기를 다룬 이 소설은 그녀의 어린 시절 경험을 모티브로 삼고 있다.4) 이어서 출간한 화제작 《82년생 김지영》(2016)은 3개월이라는 짧은 시간에 완성된 소설이다.5) 가정주부로서의 자전적 경험이 녹아있는 《82년생 김지영》(2016)은 그녀가 한국 사회 여성들이 맞닥뜨린 차별과 불평등 문제를 직접적으로 다루기로 마음먹고 집필한 작품이라고 한다.6) 《82년생 김지영》(2016)이 한국 소설로는 9년 만에 밀리언셀러를 기록한 이후 페미니스트 에세이, 페미니즘 소설 등 여성 이슈와 관련한 작품들을 주로 발표하였다. 2019년에는 노인, 아이, 성소수자, 난민, 장애인 등 흔히 소수자 비주류라는 사람들의 이야기를 담은 《사하맨션》7)을 출간했다.
작품 세계
작가 스스로도 “그때그때 생긴 질문들에 대해 소설을 쓰고 싶다”고 말했을 만큼 그녀의 소설은 대체적으로 현실적인 문제를 미사여구 없는 간결한 문체로 다루고 있다.8) 또한, 소외된 사람들의 일상을 사실적이고 공감도 높은 스토리로 표현해내고 있다는 평가를 받고 있다.9)
데뷔작인 장편소설 《귀를 기울이면》(2011)은 서번트 증후군에 걸려 바보라 불리던 소년 김일우가 우연히 자신의 뛰어난 청각 능력을 발견한 뒤 일명 ‘야바위’로 불리는 쓰리컵대회에 참가하면서 일어나는 이야기를 다루고 있다.10) 이 소설은 뛰어난 현실감각을 바탕으로 속물적 욕망에 길들여진 세계와 그 속에서 살아가는 소시민들의 모습을 사실적으로 그려냈다는 평가를 받았다. 조남주 특유의 흡인력 높은 다큐적 서술 방식도 주목을 받았다.11)
4년의 공백기 이후 발표한 《고마네치를 위하여》(2016)는 세계적인 체조선수 코마네치와 자신을 동일시하며 꿈을 키우던 소녀가 어느덧 30대 후반의 백수 아가씨가 되어 가족들과 함께 재개발지구에서 살아가는 모습을 그리고 있다.12) 이 소설은 소시민들의 삶을 다룬다는 점에서 데뷔작과 비슷한 소재를 다루지만, 가난의 대물림과 경제적 양극화 등 한국사회의 문제점을 더욱 디테일하게 묘사했다는 평을 받았다.13)
이어서 출간한 장편소설 《82년생 김지영》(2016)은 1982년생 김지영으로 대변되는 한국 여성들의 보편적인 일상을 사실적으로 재현하면서, 보이지 않는 차별들이 어떻게 여성들의 삶을 제약하고 억압하는지를 설득력있게 보여주었다고 평가되었다.14) 각종 통계와 언론 기사 등 실제 자료를 적극 활용하는 작가 특유의 다큐적 서술 방식이 장점이 효과적으로 발휘된 이 소설은 한국에서 페미니즘의 대중화가 이루어지던 시점과 맞물려 큰 사회적 반향을 얻었으며15), 단기간에 영국, 프랑스, 이탈리아, 일본 등 16개 나라에 번역될 정도로 세계적으로도 큰 관심을 받았다.16)
소설집 《그녀 이름은》(2018)은 십대부터 칠십대까지 결혼을 하고 아이를 낳아 키우는 여성, 열정 페이를 강요받는 비정규직 여성, 손자 손녀를 양육하는 여성 등 또다시 젠더 이슈를 다루고 있다.17) 장편소설 《사하맨션》(2019)은 기업 인수로 지어진 가상의 도시국가와 그 안에 있는 기괴하고 퇴락한 공동주택을 배경으로 국가 시스템 밖에 소외된 난민 공동체의 삶을 디스토피아 세계관으로 그려낸 작품이다.18)

Introduction
Cho Nam-ju (1978~) is a Korean novelist. She became a million-selling author with her Parinyeonsaeng gimjiyeong (82년생 김지영 Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982), a book that reports gender inequality in Korea through the life of an ordinary woman named Kim Jiyoung, as it recorded accumulated sales of one million copies[1]. She is famous for her witty prose and writing realistic episodes whose form is similar to a reportage. Cho calls herself a feminist, and continuously publishes gender related novels.
Life
Cho Nam-ju was born in 1978 in Seoul. She majored in sociology in university and worked as a freelance scriptwriter for a current affairs TV show for ten years. Upon marriage and childbirth, she took time off from her work and became a fulltime housewife. Cho grew tired of committing her life only to childrearing and started to write novels at home.[2] She made her first literary debut with her Gwireul giurimyeon (귀를 기울이면 When You Listen) (2011).[3]
After four years of career break, Cho received the HwangsanbeolLiterature Award (황산벌문학상) for her Gomanechireul wihayeo (고마네치를 위하여 For Gomanechi) (2016), and published her second book. The novel, which follows a family living in a poor hillside village on the outskirts of Seoul, was inspired by her childhood experiences.[4] Her next big hit Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 (2016) was written in just three months.[5] Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 (2016) reflects her own experiences of living as a housewife, and it has been said that Cho wrote the piece aiming to address directly the discrimination and inequality that Korean women face in society.[6] After Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 (2016) became a million-seller in just nine years, which is unprecedented for a Korean novel, Cho published books mainly related to women’s issues including feminist essays and novels. In 2019, she published Sahamaensyeon (사하맨션 Saha Mansion)[7], a story about the so-called minorities and the marginalized such as seniors, children, LGBT, refugees, or the disabled.
Works
The writer said, “I want to write a novel that deals with the questions that come up depending on the situations,” and true to those words, her novels are usually written in a simple style, without any flowery language to address down-to-earth issues.[8] Moreover, her books are judged to have depicted realistic and highly relatable stories about the daily lives of the marginalized.[9]
Her debut novel Gwireul giurimyeon (2011) deals with the story of a boy named Kim Il-u who has Savant Syndrome and is treated as a retard. He somehow finds out that he has an excellent sense of hearing and participates in the “three cups competition” known as “yabawi.”[10] The book was reviewed as having a strong sense of reality and realistically depicted the world where people have become used to snobby desires and the middle class citizens living there. Cho Nam-ju’s unique, magnetic, documentary-like style of writing also garnered attention.[11]
Cho’s Gomanechireul wihayeo (2016), published after her four years of career break, depicts the life of a girl who used to dream of becoming an athlete, admiring and identifying herself with the global gymnast Komanechi, but is now a jobless young woman in her late 30s living with her family in a region under renewal.[12]
This book has received comments that while its topic is similar to that of Cho’s debut novel in a sense that it deals with the lives of ordinary middle class people, it has described in more detail the problems of Korean society like poverty being handed down to generations and economic polarization.[13]
Cho’s next novel Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 (2016) was praised for telling the story of common, everyday lives of Korean women, through a character Kim Jiyoung who was born in 1982, and that it realistically and convincingly showed how invisible discriminations limit and oppress the lives of women.[14] The author’s unique, documentary-like writing style of using various statistics, media reports, and other data has been effectively realized in this book, and the novel created a huge social backlash against the backdrop of the popularization of feminist discussions[15] and even gained worldwide attention, being translated into sixteen languages in England, France, Italy, Japan, and many more within a very short period of time.[16]
Her short story collection Geunyeo ireumeun (그녀 이름은 Her Name Is) (2018) also deals with gender issues and depicts the lives of women in their teens to seventies, like a married woman with kids, a temporary worker who is forced to work passionately without getting paid, or an old woman who looks after her grandchildren.[17] Her novel Sahamaensyeon (사하맨션 Saha Mansion) (2019) is set in a virtual city made through company acquisition, and it depicts bizarre, dilapidated communal house and the lives of refugee community that is neglected from the nation’s system in a dystopian worldview.[18]
