作者以当年韩国“学运”为背景，通过对年轻人卢银林和金明宇悲伤恋情的描写，为读者讲述了“386”一代的悲伤与梦想。与书中主人公“386”多岁，80 年代读大学，60年代出生一相仿的群体，被称为韩国的“386”一代。在充满不公平的20世纪80年代，他们为了实现大众的理想，不得不舍弃自己的梦想、牺牲自我。《鲭鱼》字里行间热烈而含蓄地表达了这些“过来人”对当年“学运”和女性问题的苦恼与反思。
