1986년 <세계의 문학>에 연재를 시작한 이후 2010년 총 30권으로 완결, 출간된 고은의 연작시집이다. 이 시집으로 작가는 제2회 만해문학상, 제12회 한국문학작가상을 수상했다. 시인은 연작시편들에서 실명(實名)으로 민중들의 삶과 상처를 기록했는데, 이는 민중의 삶과 역사가 무관하지 않음을 드러내고자 한 것이다.

First serialized in the quarterly Segyeui Munhak in 1986, this 30-volume cycle of poems by Ko Un was completed and published in 2010. In recognition of this literary achievement, the poet was awarded the Manhae Literary Prize and the Korean Literature Prize. The poems recall real-life individuals who are referred to by their actual names in recognition of the fact that people’s lives and histories are neither insignificant nor irrelevant.
