Plot

On a hot summer day, dozens of people are imprisoned in a small prison cell. There is no place to lie down, let alone drink a sip of water. While the first-person narrator is in pain along with others, he finds out that a 70-year-old man has been sentenced to 90 lashings, he suggests that the old man take his punishment and get out of prison instead of appealing to a higher court. He knew that if the old man would die from the lashings, but he wanted the prison to be a little less crowded.

This is considered as a short work of fiction that realistically reveals human selfishness in extreme situations.

1922년 12월부터 1923년 1월까지 <동명>에 연재된 단편소설이다. 극한 상황 속에서 드러나는 인간의 이기심을 사실적으로 드러내는 작품으로 평가된다.
