This is a debut short story written by Kang Kyung-ae, a representative female novelist during the Japanese colonial period. It depicts the agony of young college students living in the colonial era and people’s destitute lives in Korean society.

1931년 <조선일보>에 발표한 단편소설로, 일제강점기 대표적인 여성 소설가인 강경애의 데뷔작이다. 식민지 시대를 살아가는 젊은 대학생들의 고뇌와 한국 사회의 궁핍한 생활상을 담고 있다고 평가된다.
