Plot

The narrator, Seo Jaehui, is told by the police that her older brother, Seo Yeongu, is dead, having frozen on a mountain overlooking the hospital where Hyeju, the woman he once loved, is imprisoned. In the past, Yeongu and Hyeju both had feelings for each other, but the relationship broke down when Noh Sanggyu, the son of a chaebol family who amassed wealth through pro-Japanese collaborationist activity, pursued Hyeju, whose mother had been forced into labor under Japanese colonial rule. Sanggyu eventually married Hyeju, leading her into a life of misery. The narrator helps Hyeju escape from the hospital, and learns about her life.

This novel by Park Bum Shin was published in 2001. Initially serialized in Munwha Ilbo, it was suddenly discontinued in 1993 before eventual completion and publication eight years later. Although superficially about romantic love, the story addresses a variety of issues, such as the growth of chaebol in Korea, modern political history, and mental illness. The novel is considered a work that deals with both Korean modern history as well as essential problems of the human condition.
