Plot

Nomi, a servant of Hwang Jinsa, is in love with the woman’s daughter, Jini. Hwang Jini returns his affections, but the difference in their status means they can never be together. Jini becomes a gisaeng, and Nomi can only love her from afar. The story ends with his tragic death.

2004년에 출간된 홍석중의 장편소설이다. 같은 해 제19회 만해문학상을 수상했다. 문해문학상 수상은 북한의 작가가 남한에서 제정한 문학상을 받은 드문 사례에 속한다. 작품은 기존의 '황진이'서사가 지녔던 조선의 사대부들이 중심이 아니라 계급과 신분을 뛰어넘는 사랑을 풍부한 우리말로 묘사해내었다.

This novel by Hong Seokjung was published in 2002 in North Korea, and in 2004 in South Korea. It received the Manhae Literary Award in 2004, the first time it was awarded to a North Korean writer, and a rare case where a North Korean author received a literary award from a South Korean institution. Rather than place the Joseon-era gentry at the heart of the novel, as is usually the case with Hwang Jini-based narratives, the novel depicts in sumptuous prose a love that transcends class and status.
