Plot

A college student living alone in the university district, the narrator slowly loses meaning in life, crushed by the slow grind of poverty. It is only at the local convenience store, which she occasionally visits, that she is able to forget reality for a while. By purchasing a few cheap items, the narrator is able to feel like just another ordinary urban consumer.

2005년에 출간된 김애란의 소설집<달려라, 아비>에 수록된 단편이다. 작품은 가난한 청년의 눈에 비친 자본주의의 모순과 비참한 일상을 예리한 시선으로 그리고 있다.

This short story by Kim Ae-ran was published in the author’s collection of short stories Run, Daddy, Run in 2005. It is a keen observation of the contradictions of capitalism and the miserable daily life of a poor young college student.
