Plot

Chen is a famous Chinese master chef, and a member of a secret vigilante group. With his Korean wife, Gilsuk, he plots to assassinate Mori, the commander of the Japanese Kwantung Army in Manchuria. Brought together by a tragic history, a number of individuals living in Manchuria are drawn to the resistance and to each other, sharing food from their respective homelands, and offering solace and understanding.

2017년 출간된 권정현의 장편소설이다. 제7회 혼불문학상 수상작이다. 작품은 1945년 일본 패망 직전 만주에서 벌어진 한국인과 중국인, 일본인의 이야기다. 만주의 일본 관동군 사령관을 암살하려는 중국인과 한국인의 계획 그리고 요리사인 주인공을 통해 음식의 맛으로 연결된 사람들의 연대와 공존의 가능성을 그리고 있다.

This novel by Gwon Junghyeon was published in 2017, and received the Honbul Prize. Set in Manchuria just before Japan’s defeat in 1945, it follows a group of Chinese and Korean resistance fighters who plot to assassinate the commander of the Japanese Kwantung Army in Manchuria. The novel also explores the possibility of solidarity and coexistence among people of different backgrounds, who share a connection to food through the main character, who is a chef.
