Plot

Yi Junseop, a writer, returns to his hometown when his 80-year-old mother dies. Relatives begin to arrive for the funeral, and old tensions resurface, such as the family’s problems with land and a nephew who stole from the family years ago. The relatives express their condolences and continue on with their lives.

1996년에 출간된 이청준의 장편소설이다. 같은 해, 동명의 제목으로 영화로도 만들어졌다. 작품은 작가의 모친이 1994년 87세로 세상을 떠난 후 장례를 치른 일을 토대로 만든 이야기다. 글의 진행이 사실과 거의 일치하고 등장하는 인물도 몇몇을 제하고는 실제이름을 사용했다. 작가는 노모(老母)의 죽음을 통해 가족 단위로 이루어지는 장례가 슬픔이 아니라 삶의 한 단계로서 하나의 축제일 수도 있음을 그려내었다.

This novel by Yi Chong-Jun was published in 1996 and also adapted into a film that year. The novel is based on the funeral of the author’s own mother, who died in 1994 at the age of 87. According to the author, the story is almost entirely consistent with what actually happened, with even the characters (save for a few exceptions) being named after real people. The author shows how a family funeral can also be a festival celebrating a stage of life, rather than simply a sorrowful occasion.
