Plot

The narrator, a twelve-year-old girl, moves to Incheon with her family. Surrounded by damaged buildings, Japanese-owned houses, and U.S. army base camps, she encounters various remnants of the war and experiences tragic events as she grows up on the streets of the city’s Chinatown.

1979년 <문학과 지성>에 발표된 오정희의 단편소설이다. 한국 전쟁의 참상이 남아 있는 중국인 거리의 모습을 어린 소녀의 시선으로 포착하며 삶에 대한 비극적 인식을 드러내고 있다. 막 사춘기에 접어든 주인공은 복잡하고 혼란스러운 세계를 마주하며 삶에 대한 수많은 의문을 느끼고, 그 의문들이 양분이 되어 자의식의 싹이 움튼다.

“Chinatown” is a short story by Oh Jung-hee that was first published in Literature and Intelligence in 1979. In this coming-of-age tale, the young narrator observes the tragic and horrifying effects of the Korean War. Facing a complex, chaotic world as well as puberty, the young narrator gains a greater awareness of life, sex, and death as she grows up on the streets of Chinatown.
