Plot

The story introduces characters who are forced to cope with poverty. Mah is an ex-professor who now lives off his girlfriend; a mother has obsessive control over her daughter due to her distrust of men and the world; her daughter is trapped in the abusive relationship with her mother; another woman thinks  romance is as trifling as instant food; a man tries to survive with only the bare necessities.

2003년에 출간된 배수아의 장편소설이다. 이 작품은 총 17편의 에피소드가 '가난'이라는 주제 아래 나열되어 있다. 사건과 인물들은 특별한 연관성을 보이지 않지만 '스키야키 식당'의 주변에 모여 사는 인물들의 비루한 삶을 보여준다. 가난의 다양한 양상을 포착하면서 독특하고 개성 넘치는 인물들이 제시되어 있다.

Published in 2003, this novel by Bae Suah is told in 17 separate episodes. The characters do not have much in common except for the fact that they live near a sukiyaki restaurant and are forced to live and cope with different forms of poverty—emotional, intellectual, educational, or financial poverty.
