Plot

The narrator in the story grows up in a small town with a very old train station where there is a booking clerk who has only his left arm. Despite his intimidating looks, he turns out to be a wonderful storyteller, and the narrator spends his time listening to the booking clerk’s stories.

1980년 계간지 <세계의 문학> 겨울호에 발표된 이문열의 단편소설이다.  작품은 주인공이 만난 사람들로부터 들은 많은 이야기와 이별을 다루고 있다. 작가는 특별하지 않고 보잘것 없는 사람들의 연속된 이야기가 세상을 지탱하고 있음을 말하고 있다.
