Plot

Although she grew up in a wealthy environment, Yujeong leads a cynical and gloomy life due to her wounds from her childhood. Unable to handle her existence, Yujeong attempts suicide several times, and her aunt, who is a nun, introduces her to a volunteer program for death row inmates. There she gets to know Jeong Yunsu, who is about to be executed for accidentally killing three women. She becomes intrigued by Yunsu’s quiet and pure attitude and begins to investigate the murder he committed. As his execution date approaches, Yujeong wants a stay of execution.

2005년에 출간된 공지영의 장편소설이다. 2006년에 영화로 만들어져 대중들의 공감을 얻었다. 작품은 사형제 제도의 현실성에 대해서 문제를 제기하고 있다. 작가는 소설에서 법을 만든 인간, 살인을 한 죄인, 인간의 생명을 죽이는 법 등 인간이 인간의 죽음을 결정하는 제도에 대해서 전면적인 검토가 필요하다는 주장을 한다. 죄와 벌, 삶과 죽음, 용서와 징벌, 생명의 가치 등 오래도록 논의가 필요한 문제에 대한 전사회적인 관심을 끌어낸 작품이다.

This is a novel by Gong Ji-Young, published in 2005. It was adapted into a film in 2006 and gained widespread popularity. The novel raises questions about the reality of the death penalty system. In it, the author argues that it is necessary to comprehensively review the system in which humans determines the death of other humans, such as lawmakers, the criminal who committed murder, and the law that allows for the death of human lives. It drew society-wide interest in issues that require lengthy discussions, such as crime and punishment, life and death, forgiveness and penalties, and the value of life.
