Plot

Byeong-tae transfers from Seoul to the countryside because of his father's work. In Byeong-tae’s class, Eom Seok-dae tyrannizes his friends. The children in the same class tremble in fear as they do what Seok-dae tells them to do. Then a new homeroom teacher comes to their class. The teacher notices the strange atmosphere in the class, and even finds out that Seok-dae manages to get good grades by cheating. Afterward, Seok-dae's dictatorship in the class comes to an end, and the students begin to seek a new order. However, Byeong-tae realizes the limitations of the new order, as it was achieve by the new teacher, not by the students.

This is a story written by Yi Mun-yol published in the summer issue of Segyeui munhak (World Literature) in 1987. In the same year, it won the 11th Yi Sang Literary Award and was adapted into a film in 1992. It relates the events that reflect the absurd reality such as tyranny, dictatorship, and test manipulation among students in a rural elementary school through an ambivalent and reminiscent perspective. It received high praise from critics and the public as it touched on the topic that was relatable to the political situation in Korea at the time.

1987년 <세계의 문학>여름호에 발표했으며 같은 해 단행본으로 출간된 이문열의 소설이다. 같은 해 제11회 이상문학상을 수상했다. 1992년에 영화로 만들어졌다. 작품은 시골의 국민학교에서 벌어진 학생들 사이의 횡포, 독재, 시험 조작 등 부조리한 현실을 반영한 사건을 양가론적 시각과 회상의 기법을 통해 전달하고 있다. 당시 한국의 정치상황과 연결할 수 있는 접점이 많은 주제이기도해서 평단과 대중으로부터 고평을 받았다.
