Plot

Living in the countryside with her grandmother, the narrator is around adults more often than her peers. She realizes how foolish and false the words and actions of adults are, and she loses interest in the world. Watching the adults around her grandmother make a false show of power, the narrator decides that she doesn't want to become an adult, but at the same time realizes why they have no choice but to live that way. Watching the women of the village who are faced with painful difficulties yet struggling to laugh even a little more, as well as the villagers who blab other people’s secrets, the narrator learns the logic of the world and become disillusioned with the world.

This is a novel by Eun Heekyung, published in 1996. It won the 1st Munhakdongne Novel Award. The work presents the lives of adults through the eyes of a 12-year-old girl. With a cheerful and transparent gaze, the author paints a picture of the protagonist who decides that she does not want to become a ridiculous adult as she grows up witnessing how the words and actions of adults full of lies. The novel gained widespread popularity, being printed 73 times since publication, and a slightly revised version of the novel was published in 2010 in celebration of the 15th year of the novel’s publication.

1996년에 출간된 은희경의 장편소설로 제1회 문학동네소설상 수상작이다. 작품은 12살 소녀의 시선을 통해 어른들의 삶을 보여주고 있다. 허위로 가득한 어른들의 말과 행동에서 우스꽝스러운 어른이 되고 싶지 않다는 결심을 하는 주인공과 그런 주인공을 경쾌하고 투명한 시선으로 그려낸 작가의 문장이 소설의 재미를 높였다. 초판 출간 이후 73쇄를 찍는 등 많은 인기를 누렸던 소설을 15년만인 2010년에 개정판을 냈는데, 일부 문장을 다듬었을 뿐 내용이나 형식은 그대로 유지했다.
