Here, the awkward, tentative relationship between Eungyo and Mujae, who both dropped out of formal education to work as repair-shop assistants, is made yet more uncertain by their economic circumstances, while their matter-of-fact discussion of a strange recent development – the shadows of the slum’s inhabitants have started to ‘rise’ – leaves the reader to make up their own mind as to the nature of this shape-shifting tale.   Hwang’s spare prose is illuminated by arresting images, quirky dialogue and moments of great lyricism, crafting a deeply affecting novel of perfectly calibrated emotional restraint. Dans ce premier roman, Hwang Jungeun raconte l’histoire d’amour singulière de deux employés d’un marché d’électronique sur lequel plane un risque de démolition. Parallèlement à la relation qui se tisse entre Mujae et Eungyo, l’autrice met en scène d’autres personnages plus ou moins marginaux et dépeint une société cruelle au sein de laquelle règne l’indifférence et la solitude. Le fantastique est au cœur de l’œuvre. Les êtres sont affectés par un phénomène inquiétant : leur ombre se « lève » et se retourne contre eux, cherchant à les posséder. L’émancipation des ombres se produit toujours dans un moment de faiblesse, si bien que le langage apparaît toujours biaisé, détourné, ce qui permet d’esquiver la violence et la normalisation du monde. Mieux qu’une simple histoire d’amour, l’autrice évoque avec sensibilité une relation, douloureuse et courageuse, en évitant tous les clichés. Mujae et Eungyo résistent ensemble à l’inhumanité qui les environne, et leur lien apparaît comme une esquisse de communauté possible au sein d’un monde atomisé.
