Plot

This novel focuses on a U.S. military base in Korea and the life of Lee Gyeong, who lives around the base after the Korean War. She falls in love with the painter Ok Hee-do, but that love does not come true.

This book examines the significance of the Korean War in Korean history through personal history. This is writer Park Wan-suh’s debut novel and is considered to occupy an important place in Korean realist literature.

이경은 한국전쟁 당시 사망한 두 오빠에 대한 그리움을 지닌 채 미군기지에서 일하며 어머니와 생활한다. 화가가 되고 싶었던 꿈을 접고 지내던 이경은 불우한 화가 옥희도를 사랑하게 된다. 그러나 그 사랑은 이루어지지 않았고, 중년이 된 이경은 우연히 옥희도의 유작 전시회에 가게된다.
