1. 도입부
이문재(1959년~)는 대한민국의 시인, 교수이다. ‘생태적 상상력’을 문학적으로 구현하는 시인이라고 평가받는다. 현대문학에 대한 평론활동도 겸하고 있으며, 현재는 경향신문에 칼럼도 연재 중이다. 경희대학교 문예창작학과 교수로 재직 중이다.
2. 생애
이문재(1959년~)는 대한민국의 시인이다. ‘생태적 상상력’을 문학으로 구현하는 시인이라고 평가받는다. 현대문학에 대한 평론활동도 겸하고 있으며, 현재는 경향신문에 칼럼도 연재 중이다. 경기도 김포(현 인천시 서구) 에서 태어나 경희대 국문과를 졸업했다. 1982년 대학생으로서 『시운동』 4집에 <우리 살던 옛집 지붕> 등을 발표하며 작품 활동을 시작했다. 시집 『내 젖은 구두 벗어 해에게 보여줄 때』 『산책시편』 『마음의 오지』, 산문집 『바쁜 것이 게으른 것이다』, 『내가 만난 시와 시인』 등을 출간했다. 추계예술대학교 문예창작학과 겸임교수, 시사저널 취재부장을 역임한 바 있다. 현재 문학동네 편집주간, 녹색평론 편집위원을 맡고 있다. 김달진 문학상, 노작문학상, 시와 시학 젊은 시인상, 소월시 문학상 등을 수상했다.
3. 작품세계
이문재는 유연한 시적 상상력으로 현실 세계를 부유하는 젊은 영혼의 이미지를 그려내는 시인이었다. 초창기에 그의 시는 세상과의 불화를 겪고 방랑하는 젊은이의 삶을 그려냈다. 거기에는 시인 자신의 경험이 녹아있었다. 시인은 이사를 자주 다니고 유복하지도 않았으며 엄격한 아버지 밑에서 몽상을 통해서만이 자유로워질 수 있었던 유년기를 보냈다. 이문재의 초기시집에서 그런 유년시절이 경험이 짙게 드러난다. 그의 초기 작품에서 ‘길’은 중요한 심상(Image)이다. 그것은 이사를 자주 다녀야 했던 시인 자신의 경험을 힐끗 반영하는 것이면서, 궁극적으로는 '가지 않은 길'을 상상하고 새로이 방랑을 떠나고 싶다는 시인의 바람을 드러내고 있다. 이 당시 이문재는 미래에 대한 근심과 불안을 가지고 방랑을 꿈꾸는 청년세대의 마음을 대변하는 시인으로 알려졌다.
한편 <마음의 오지> 이후 그의 시는 생태적 상상력을 구현해낸다고 평가받는다. <마음의 오지>는 농업을 소재로 삼아 인류 역사를 망쳐놓은 인간중심주의를 비판한다. <제국호텔>에서 그는 오늘날의 세계가 ‘제국’이라고 단언한다. 시인은 그런 디스토피아에 대해 문학적으로 저항하기 위해, 자신의 감감을 일깨워주던 것들을 추억 속에서 발굴한다.
이렇게 시대에 따라 소재는 조금씩 변해왔지만, 이문재의 시는 항상 다채로운 심상과 독창적 시어를 가지고 있었다. 그것은 물질적인 것만이 숭배되고 정신적, 감성적인 것들이 사장되는 세계에서 감성을 새로이 고양시키기 위한 도구와도 같았다. 요컨대 그는 메타포를 통해 디스토피아적인 세계의 상처를 치유해온 시인이다.

Lee Moon-jae (born 1959) is a South Korean poet and professor. He is described as a poet who expresses ‘environmental imagination’ in his literature. He also critiques contemporary literature, and currently writes a column in the Kyunghyang Shinmun. He is a creative writing professor at Kyung Hee University.

He was born in Gimpo, Gyeonggi-do (currently Seo-gu, Incheon), and graduated from Kyunghee University in Korean Literature. He began his literary career in 1982 while still a university student by publishing Uri saldeon yetjib jibung (우리 살던 옛집 지붕 Our Old Home’s Roof) on the 4th issue of Siundong. He has published poetry collections, Ne jeojeun gudu beoseo hae-ege boyeojul ttae(내 젖은 구두 벗어 해에게 보여줄 때 When I Take Off My Wet Shoe and Show It to the Sun), ‘Sanchaeksipyeon’, Maeumui oji (마음의 오지 The Backwoods of the Nind), and essay collections Babbeun geosi ge-eureun geosida (바쁜 것이 게으른 것이다 Busy is Lazy), Naega mannan siwa si-in (내가 만난 시와 시인 The Poems and Poets I’ve Met). Previously he worked as an adjunct professor in creative writing at Chugye University for the Arts, and as a news director at Sisa journal. Currently he is the executive editor at Munhakdongne, and editor at the Green Review. He has been awarded the Kimdaljin Literature Prize, the Nojak Literature Prize, the Poetry and Poetics Award, and the Sowol Poetry Award.
3. Writing
Lee Moon-jae is a poet who drew an image of young souls adrift in the real world, with flexible poetic imagination. Early in his career, his poetry described the life of a youth who experiences discord with the world, and aimlessly drifts. His early works reflect the poet’s own experiences. In his childhood he moved often, did not have a comfortable life, and was raised under a strict father. Only through daydreaming he could escape such realities. Lee Moon-jae’s early poetry collections heavily reflect such childhood experiences. In his early works, ‘the road’ is an important image. It gives a glimpse of the poet’s own experiences of having had to move often, and ultimately it reflects the poet’s desire to imagine an ‘uncharted road’ and newly wander. At the time, Lee Moon-jae was known as a poet that represents the minds of the young generation that were worried and uncertain of their future, and desired to wander.
Meanwhile, after Maeumui oji (마음의 오지 The Backwoods of the Mind), his poetry has been praised as expressing environmental imagination. Maeumui oji (마음의 오지 The Backwoods of the Mind) deals with agriculture, and criticizes the anthropocentricism that has ruined human history. In Jegukhotel (제국호텔 Imperial Hotel), he states that today’s world is a ‘Jeguk’ (empire). To resist through literature against such dystopia, he dug into his memories for things that awakened his emotions.
As such, his subject matter has changed little by little, but Lee Moon-jae’s poetry has always had colorful imagery and unique poetic language. To him, they were tools that could newly lift up emotions in a materialistic world where things of mental and emotional nature are dying out. To sum up, he is a poet that has been healing the wounds of a dystopian world through metaphor.
