The Literature Translation Institute of Korea (LTI Korea) sponsored author Gong Ji-Young’s participation in multiple Korean literature events in Brazil, which took place from July 22 to 27. Gong took part in events hosted in Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro at the invitation of the Associação Nacional de Escritores (ANE), an association of Brazilian writers. A Korean literature event was held alongside the opening of the third book report competition on August 23 at 8PM at the auditorium of the ANE office in Brasilia. The Brasilia Book Report Competition, overseen by the ANE and part of LTI Korea’s international Korean literature book report project, celebrated the third anniversary of its inception. Gong’s novel Our Happy Time (released as Nossas horas felizes in Brazil by Record in 2017) was the subject of the competition. The event consisted of an introduction to the competition and a conversation between the writers from Korea and Brazil. Paulo José Cunha, poet and professor of communications at the University of Brasília had an in-depth discussion with Gong about Our Happy Time and the writing process, as well as issues like the death penalty, human rights, modern-day depression, and suicide. The event was attended by over 100 ANE members and local middle- and high school students and their teachers, with South Korean ambassador to brazil Kim Chan-woo and his wife also in attendance.
