The fiction selection for this episode is Finding My Voice by Marie Myung-Ok Lee. Reissued this year, Finding My Voice was the first-ever young adult fiction with an Asian American lead character and by an Asian American author. It tells the story of Ellen Sung, the only non-white student at her Minnesota high school. When she becomes interested in a blond, popular football player—and he becomes interested in her—she has to fight the racist bullies that abound at her school, as well as the disapproval of her Korean immigrant parents. We also hear from Amy Green, an environmental reporter in Orlando whom our listeners will recognize for terrific environmental reporting for Florida Public Radio. Her new book, Moving Water, explores the complicated ecosystem of the Everglades. The 1.5-million-acre wetlands is critical to the health of Florida, but it has been threatened for decades by corporate polluters and politicians who don’t have its best interest at heart. Her book tells us where we can go from here. Buy the books from the writers' favorite independent bookstores! Marie Myung-Ok Lee chose Word Up and BookCulture, both in New York City. Amy Green chose Writer's Block in Orlando.
