Poetry. Asian Studies. VOICES IN DIVERSITY: POETS FROM POSTWAR KOREA offers a selection of poems from 37 South Korean poets born in or after 1945, edited and translated by poet Ko Won. The selected poets represent the voice of a nation emerging from Japanese rule; they are witnesses to sweeping political, social and cultural developments who have distilled their experience of a dynamic world into a precise and elegant poetics deeply concerned with modern political realities. Much as with the Middle East, these realities virtually demand a greater acquaintance with the arts and culture of this region, a knowledge which this collection certainly provides. Ko Won has published fourteen books of poetry, is a member of the P.E.N. Center USA West, and directs the Kulmaru Institute of Literature, Los Angeles. https://www.abebooks.com/9780893048853/Voices-Diversity-Poets-Postwar-Korea-0893048852/plp

Poetry. Translated from the Korean by Brother Anthony, President of the Royal Asiatic Society Korea Branch and translator who has introduced international readers to several Korean works. An English rendition of a collection of poetry by Do Jonghwan, one of Korea's most beloved poets. Do's literary career started in 1984, when he released Age of Division while teaching Korean language and literature to highschool students. His second poetry collection, You the Hollyhock, sold over a million copies and was made into a film, and he became one of Korea's most influential poets during the 1980s, popular among critics and readers alike. Through poetry, Do found beauty in the poverty of his youth and in the sadness and pain from losing his wife to illness. He portrays flowers, trees, creeks, wind, mountains, and other shifts in nature through a unique poetic sensibility. Having accepted poetry as his "fate and companion," he conveys simple truths and wisdom, such as how life matures and finds beauty amid pain and suffering.

A GALAXY OF WHALE POEMSEnglish(English) Book Available
Kim Nam Jo et al / 김남조 et al / 2005 / -
In Ulsan, Korea, there are rare paintings of whales engraved on a rock by prehistoric men thousands of years ago. One of these outstanding engravings portrays a mother whale and her baby. Experts on Cetaceans conjecture that they could be Korean gray whales. Even prehistoric men must have been attracted by the strong maternal love of the female gray whales. Across the centuries from the prehistoric past, this collection of whale poems, sponsored by the Ulsan Writers Assembly and Ulasan Metropolitan City, is akin to the engravings of our prehistoric forefathers who delicately inscribed their caring motherly love on an ancient rock. Like the prehistoric engravings in Ulsan, this book of whale poems will engrave the Korean people s ever-lasting love for whales on the heart of all people in this world.

The Colors of DawnEnglish(English) Book Available
Kim Sun-Woo et al / 김선우 et al / 2016 / KDC구분 > literature > Korean Literature > Complete Collection > Library > Complete Collection & Library (more than 2 writers)
Throughout the twentieth century, few countries in Asia suffered more from foreign occupation, civil war, and international military conflict than Korea. The Colors of Dawn brings together the moving and powerful voices of over forty Korean poets from these turbulent years. From 1903 to 1945, the Japanese Empire occupied the Korean peninsula and instituted measures to annihilate the nation and its culture. After Japan's defeat in WWII, Korea became a killing ground during the Korean War (1950 to 1953). During this period and into the 1980s, South Korea was controlled by a military dictatorship, and today it remains on war footing. In the midst of internal and external conflicts, Korea's poets—threatened by the authorities with torture, imprisonment, and death—found ways to express their fierce desire for freedom and self-governance. The result is a century of outstanding poetry, from Sim Hun (1901) to more familiar modern and contemporary poets, such as Kim Chi-ha and Ko Ŭn.
