"Написанное в печали" - это автобиографическое повествование госпожи Хон (1735-1815), вдовы принца Садо (1735-1762), казненного в 1762 году по приказу его собственного отца вана Ёнджо (годы правления 1724-1776). Текст состоит из четырех книг, написанных в конце XVIII - начале ХIХ века. Госпожа Хон пишет о своей семье, нелегкой жизни во дворце, придворных интригах, болезни принца Садо и других обстоятельствах, приведших к трагедии.
