정유정(소설가)
1. 도입부
정유정(1966~)은 한국의 소설가이다. 미스테리, 스릴러, 추리 등 장르문학의 요소를 적극적으로 활용하면서 인간의 ‘자유의지’와 ‘악’을 테마로 한 장편소설들을 발표했다. 단편소설이 우세한 한국문학에서는 드물게 장편소설을 중심으로 활동하는 작가로 손꼽힌다.
2. 생애1)
1966년 전라남도 함평에서 태어났다. 어린 시절부터 작가가 꿈이었지만 어머니의 반대로 간호대학을 나와 간호사가 되었다. 간호사 생활을 하는 동안 어머니가 작고했고, 이후 건강보험심사평가원에서 9년간 일했다. 서른다섯 살에 직장을 그만두고 소설 습작을 시작했다. 인터넷 통신 문학 사이트에 올린 습작 소설이 호평을 받아 출판까지 하게 되었다. 그 작품이 정유정의 첫 장편소설 《열한 살 정은이》(2000)이다. 소설가로 이름이 널리 알려지기 전까지 두 편의 장편소설을 더 출판했다.
출판사 편집장의 권유로 장편소설 공모전에 여러 차례 투고했으나 계속해서 낙방했다. ‘이 작가는 기지도 못 하면서 날려고 든다’는 심사평을 자극을 받아 다시 기본부터 시작하기로 결심했다. 스티븐 킹의 소설을 정독하고 필사도 했으며, 작법에 관한 이론서들을 섭렵했다. 총 11번의 공모전 탈락 이후 《내 인생의 스프링 캠프》(2007)가 《세계일보》 주관 제1회 세계청소년문학상을 수상하며 등단했다.
제 5회 세계문학상을 수상한 두 번째 장편소설 《내 심장을 쏴라》(2009)는 출간과 동시에 정유정을 인기 작가의 반열에 올려주었다. 이후 《7년의 밤》(2011), 《28》(2014), 《종의 기원》(2016), 《진이, 지니》(2019) 등의 장편소설을 꾸준히 발표했다. 이 중 《내 심장을 쏴라》와 《7년의 밤》은 각색을 거쳐 영화로 제작되었다.
3. 작품 세계
1) ‘자유의지’ 3부작과 ‘인간의 악’ 3부작
스릴러, 미스테리 등 대중문학의 스타일에 가까운 정유정의 문학을 관통하는 주제어는 ‘자유의지’와 ‘인간의 악’이라고 할 수 있다.
세상과 시스템의 폭력에서 탈출하려는 저항 의지가 두드러진 《내 인생의 스프링캠프》, 《내 심장을 쏴라》, 《7년의 밤》은 이른바 ‘자유의지 3부작’으로 불린다. 세상의 잔혹한 면을 밝혀내면서 그 속에 살아가는 인간의 모습을 낙관적으로, 때로는 유머러스하게 형상화하는 작품들이다.2)
한편 《7년의 밤》, 《28》, 《종의 기원》 등은 이른바 ‘악의 3부작’이라 불린다.3) 정유정은 “인간이라면 누구에게나 선과 악이 같이 있”다고 생각하며, 그러한 욕망을 규명하는 작업은 인간을 총체적으로 규명하는 문학의 목표와 맞닿아 있다는 의견을 밝혔다.4)
2) 대표작
《내 심장을 쏴라》(2009)
장편소설《내 심장을 쏴라》는 정신병원에 갇힌 두 주인공의 정신병원 탈출기이다. 이수명은 어머니의 자살을 목격한 이후 환청에 시달리다 정신병원에 입원했다. 같은 병동의 류승민은 형제 간의 벌어진 재산 상속 분쟁에 휘말려 정신병원에 입원했다. 두 사람은 정신병원에서 탈출하여 각자의 자유를 향해 나아간다.
“폭넓은 취재를 바탕으로 하여 치밀한 얼개, 한 호흡에 읽히는 문장, 간간이 배치된 블랙유머가 인상적”5)이라는 평을 받으며 세계문학상에 당선되었다. 두 인물을 통해 “누구에게나 잠재된 ‘정상적 광기’”를 “‘통제불능의 광기’로 만드는 비정상적인 사회”에 대한 이야기를 현장성 있게 보여준다는 평6)을 받았다.
《7년의 밤》(2011)
장편소설 《7년의 밤》은 댐 수문을 열어 한 마을을 수몰시킨 혐의로 사형선고를 받은 남자(최현수)의 아들(최서원)을 주인공으로 하여 이야기를 전개한다. 살인자의 아들로서 사회의 냉대와 멸시를 받으며 살아온 주인공은 사건 이후 7년째 되는 해에 당시 사건의 진실을 알게 된다. 죄와 악에 대한 남다른 시선으로 높은 평가를 받은 이 작품을 통해 정유정은 뛰어난 장편소설 작가로서 널리 인정받을 수 있었다. 그러나 장르소설로서의 테크닉은 뛰어나지만, 이 작품의 ‘문학성’이 ‘대중 소설’의 수준을 넘어서지 못한다는 부정적인 평가도 있다.7)
3) 비평적 반응
순수문학과 대중문학을 둘로 나누고 전자에 높은 가치를 부여하는 한국 문학의 오랜 관행 속에서, 정유정의 소설은 둘 사이의 경계를 허물고 대중적 흥미와 문학적 완성도를 동시에 성취했다는 평가를 받았다.8) 한편, 이와 달리 정유정의 소설을 문학성이 부족한 ‘웰메이드’장르문학으로 바라보는 부정적인 입장도 적지 않다. 대중적 호응도에 비해 비평적 주목도가 낮은 이른바‘비평 부재의 작가’ 정유정의 존재는 2010년대 한국문학에 여전히 순수문학과 대중문학의 이분법적 체계가 강력하게 작동하고 있다는 사실을 방증한다.9)

1. Introduction
Jeong You Jeong (1966 — ) is a South Korean writer. Actively drawing upon elements of genre literature such as mysteries, thrillers, and detective stories, she has written novels centered around the themes of humanity’s “free will” and “evil.” She is notable for primarily writing novels, an unusual decision given the predominance of short stories in Korean literature.
2. Life 1)
Jeong You Jeong was born in Hampyeong, South Jeolla Province in 1966. Though she dreamed of becoming a writer from an early age, she instead went to nursing school because of her mother’s opposition and later became a nurse. Her mother passed away while she was working as a nurse and afterwards, she worked for nine years at the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service. At the age of 35, she quit her regular job and started to study and write novels. A rough draft of a novel that she posted online on a literature website received favorable reviews and was even published. This work was her first novel, Yeolhan sal jeongeuni (Eleven-Year-Old Jeong-euni열한 살 정은이, 2000). Even before she became famous as an author, she published two other novels.
At the suggestion of a editor-in-chief at a publishing house, Jeong You Jeong entered open competitions for novels several times, but was continuously unsuccessful. Motivated by the evaluation committee’s negative comment which stated, “Failing to even crawl, this author attempts to fly,” she resolved to re-learn writing from its foundations. She carefully read Stephen King’s novels, while also extensively reading and studying theories and texts on writing and composition techniques. After failing open competitions for novels a total of eleven times, she finally won the 1st Segye Ilbo World Young Adult Literature Prize (《세계일보》세계청소년문학상) for her work, Nae insaengui seupeuring kaempeu (내 인생의 스프링 캠프The Spring Camp of My Life, 2007), and made her debut as an official writer. Her second novel, Nae simjangeul sswara (내 심장을 쏴라Expose My Heart, 2009) won the 5th Segye Ilbo World Literature Prize (《세계일보》세계문학상) while also cementing her status as a popular and beloved writer. Afterwards, she continuously published a series of novels, such as 7nyeonui bam (7년의 밤Seven Years of Darkness, 2011), 28 (28 Twenty Eight, 2014), Jongui giwon (종의 기원 The Good Son, 2016), and Jini, jini (진이, 지니Jini, jini, 2019). Among her works, Nae simjangeul sswara and Seven Years of Darkness were adapted into major commercial films.
3. Writing
1) “Free Will” Trilogy and “The Evils of Humanity” Trilogy
The key themes that woven throughout Jeong You Jeong’s literature, which are close to the style of popular literature such as thrillers and mysteries, can be seen as “free will” and the “evils of humanity.”
Nae insaengui seupeuring kaempeu, Nae simjangeul sswara, and Seven Years of Darkness, which prominently depict a will to resist through escaping from the violence of the world and its systems, have collectively been called the “Free Will” trilogy. These works, while exposing the world’s cruelties, nevertheless depict the conditions of the people who live within them in a positive, occasionally even humorous, manner. 2)
On the other hand, Seven Years of Darkness, 28, and The Good Son have together been deemed the so-called “The Evils of Humanity” Trilogy.3) Believing that “all humans contain both good and evil,” Jeong You Jeong has asserted that the work of investigating such desires aligns with the purpose of literature which seeks investigate humanity in general.4)
2) Representative Works
Nae simjangeul sswara (2009)
The novel Nae simjangeul sswara is a story of escape revolving around two protagonists who are confined to a psychiatric hospital. Yi Sumyeong was hospitalized after he witnessed his mother’s suicide and subsequently started suffering from auditory hallucinations. Ryu Seungmin, who resides in the same ward, was hospitalized after being swept up in a property inheritance dispute that broke out between him and his siblings. The two protagonists seek their respective freedoms by attempting to escape from the psychiatric hospital. Reviewed as “based on an extensive range of news materials, the elaborate structure, sentences read in a single breath, and occasionally placed black humor, are memorable,” 5) the novel won the Segye Ilbo World Literature Prize. It was also reviewed as a story rooted in the present that shows “the abnormal society that transforms the ‘normal madness’ lying dormant in everyone into an ‘uncontrollable madness” through the two protagonists. 6)
Seven Years of Darkness (2011)
The novel Seven Years of Darkness traces the story of the main protagonist, the son of a man that received the death sentence under the charge of opening a dam gate and flooding a village. Having been treated coldly and with contempt by society for the entirety of his life as the son of a murderer, he discovers in the seventh anniversary of the incident’s occurrence the truth about what really happened. Through this novel, which was highly praised for viewing crime and evil through a unique perspective, Jeong You Jeong became widely recognized as a talented novelist. Despite its superb use of genre fiction techniques, it has also received negative reviews that claim its “literariness” does not exceed that of “popular fiction.” 7)
3) Critical Reception
Within the long tradition of Korean literature’s tendency to divide literature into “pure” and “popular” literature, in which the former is greatly valued, Jeong You Jeong’s novels have been appraised as tearing down the boundary between these two categories and simultaneously achieving both popular interest and a literary degree of completion.8) However, there are a considerable number of people who view Jeong You Jeong’s novels as merely “well-made” genre fiction that lacks a literary sensibility. Jeong You Jeong’s very existence, as an author that has been called “the author of absent criticism” for the low critical attention she has received in comparison to the public’s positive response, proves the reality that Korean literature, even in the 2010s, still intensely operates on a binary system of “pure” vs. “popular” literature.9)
