Né en 1935, Sin Kyǒngnim est marqué dès l'adolescence par une lecture majeure : celle de Dostoïevski. Il fait ses débuts littéraires en 1956. Suit, durant dix ans, un silence complet. Pendant ces années, il découvre le monde en exerçant les métiers les plus divers (précepteur, ouvrier, paysan, mineur, commerçant) jusqu'au jour où il se sent mûr pour prendre la parole et dire le sort de ses compagnons de labeur ou d'infortune. C'est à trente-huit ans qu'il fait paraître son premier recueil, Danses des paysans. Dès lors, ses recueils se multiplient. Après 1974 et l'attribution du prix Manhae, sa carrière publique de poète commence véritablement.
