財産家の祖父趙議官は、朝鮮王朝時代末に育った儒教的な家父長として一族に君臨し、父の相勲は、独立運動にも関わったクリスチャンだが、植民地下にあって酒色に溺れる偽善家になり果てている。徳基は、宗主国日本に遊学中の学生だが、その周辺には、共産主義運動家の炳華、同窓生でありながら父の妾となっている敬愛、徳基に心惹かれる女工ピルスンなど若い世代が、植民地朝鮮の様々な人間欲望にまみれながらも、新たな時代を拓こうと苦悩している。三世代にわたる錯綜した人間群像をリアルで重厚な筆致で描出した巨篇。
