Plot

Jo Ui gwan is a wealthy landowner, and he purchases a yangban’s genealogy for the honor of his family. His son Jo Sang hun accepts new culture and ideas from the West and runs an educational business while keeping a concubine and squandering his fortune on entertainment. Jo Ui gwan's grandson and Jo Seong hun's son, Jo Deok gi has a good personality, but he is only interested in protecting his family fortunes.

1932년 <조선일보>에 연재된 염상섭의 장편소설이다. 1919년 전후 조선 사회에서 대지주의 생태, 변화해가는 사회의 모습을 사실적으로 다루었다. 삼대에 걸쳐서 몰락하는 대지주의 가족뿐 아니라 사회주의자와 인간 군상들의 모습을 담았다. 염상섭의 대표적인 장편 소설 가운데 하나로 평가된다.

This is a novel by Yom Sang seop, serialized in The Chosun Ilbo in 1932. It realistically portrays lives of landowners and the changing society in Joseon around 1919. The novel not only describes the downfall of the landowner family over three generations, but also depicts socialists and all kinds of people of the time. This work is regarded as one of Yom Sang seop's most representative novels.
