《深院大宅》在韩国文学史上具有重要影响，曾被翻译成十几种文字出版，据其改编的影视作品在韩国也影响广泛。作者以自传体的形式展现了朝鲜战争结束后百姓为了生存而挣扎以及南北分裂所造成的社会悲剧。大院里的六户人家各有悲欢，人物各有特色；悲苦冷漠中也见温暖希望。“再怎么着，日子也得过下去”。写实的手法、娓娓的叙说蕴藉着作家的悲悯情怀和对战争、生死等人类共存问题的思考，思想深度、艺术水准均较高。
