Plot

After the end of the Korean War in the early 1950s, six families live in a house in Daegu. Gil-nam, the protagonist, lives in the fourth room of the house with his mother and two younger siblings. The six families living in this “house with a sunken courtyard” are sometimes selfish, but they realize that they must rely on each other, as they light a fire together during the rainy season. Eventually, the house with a sunken court yard is demolished, and in the process, Gil-nam's younger brother Gil-su dies due to poverty. Gil-nam learns the truth of the bitter world.

This is a novel by Kim Won-il, serialized in the summer and autumn issues of the quarterly Munhakgwa sahoe (Literature and Society) in 1988. Instead of a single grand narrative, this work captures the story of each family member and the way they live. It realistically depicts the reality of Korea after the Korean War and seeks for ways to overcome it.
