著者は1939年生まれ、韓国・小鹿島のハンセン病療養所に暮らすハンセン病回復者で、小鹿島における人権運動の中心的存在。その著者が自らの少年期から青年期までを描いた自伝である。日本の植民地支配から解放後、８歳でハンセン病者であった母とともに小鹿島のハンセン病療養所に入ったこと、そこでの生活やハンセン病にかかったこと、先人から聞いた日帝時代の小鹿島の実態、医学講習所を卒業後、小鹿島を出て、「定着村」で医師として活動を始めるまでを書いている。
