本書乃筆者曾發表的有關高句麗史的論文彙集而成，因為內容涵蓋高句麗史的整個時期，可說具有通史的性質。

本書主要陳述了筆者對高句麗史認識的基本立場，並將七百餘年的高句麗史的展開過程劃分成若干時期，把握各時期政治體制的結構特徵，並考察當時東亞國際關係的性質問題。補論部分則記述了扶餘史，以及高句麗、渤海國與中亞地區居民之間的交流關係。
