Plot

Ji Hyeong-geun, the eldest son of a noble family, heads to Cheorwon to become a laborer when his family is ruined. There, he learns that Yi-hwa, a prostitute he meets by chance, used to live near his house and was indebted to his family. Ji Hyeong-geun wastes his money while living in Cheorwon and cannot even find a job, but tries to see Yi-hwa, going as far as to steal his friend's money to do so. In the end, Ji Hyeong-geun is caught and locked up in a detention center, and he is humiliated when his name is published in a newspaper.

This work satirically depicts an anachronistic person who, despite becoming a laborer, still considers himself a yangban. In addition, this story allows the reader to see the rapid change of the Cheorwon area in the 1920s.

1926년 <조선문단>에 발표된 단편소설이다. 이 작품은 노동자가 되었음에도 여전히 자신을 양반이라 여기는 시대착오적인 인물을 풍자적으로 묘사하고 있다. 또한 1920년대 당시 철원 지역의 급격한 변모를 확인할 수 있는 작품이기도 하다.
