Plot

Wonsam, who used to be a servant for a rich family, builds a hut with the help of Seon-dal and others in a fortress where the poor live in huts. When this village is ordered to be demolished for the reasons of “harming the aesthetics,” the villagers protest the decree and die in the process. A heavy rain causes flooding and Wonsam is killed as well, and after the village is devastated, Tanaki Sanghoe Tile Factory owned by Japanese people is built at the site.

This is an early work of fiction written in Japanese by Kim Sa-ryang. It depicts the impoverished life of the marginalized lower classes during the Japanese colonial period and their resistance against the Japanese occupation.

1936년 동인지 <제방>에서 발표된 단편소설이다. 이 작품은 김사량이 일본어로 쓴 초기작으로, 일본 식민지 시대 소외된 하층민의 궁핍한 삶과 일제에 대한 저항 의식을 그려내는 소설로 평가된다.
