In a lock up at a police station in Tokyo, the narrator, who is a newspaper reporter, meets Count Wang, a strange young man who used to be an anarchist but is now leading a servile life. A year later, the narrator runs into Count Wang by chance on a train. After leaving Count Wang in a deep drunken sleep on the train, the narrator feels remorse at the thought that Count Wang may have died. Afterward, whenever the narrator sees someone drowning in a flooded river, an anti-communist guard, he thinks that the person might be Count Wang.
