This work addresses the agony and reflection of the intellectuals of the time after Korea’s liberation from Japan. However, this story is criticized for the possibility that it can be regarded as an argument for the author's self-rationalization upon being questioned about his past.

1948년 10월부터 1949년 1월까지 『백민(白民)』에 발표된 채만식의 중편소설이다. 이 작품은 광복 이후 당대 지식인의 고뇌와 반성을 다루고 있다. 그러나 자신의 과거 행적에 대해 추궁을 받게 된 작가의 자기합리화의 논변으로 여겨질 수 있다는 평을 받는다.
