Wonbo, who used to be known as a sincere person and a good worker, loses his wife to the son of a wealthy man named Kim Chambong, and becomes a lowlife who hates the world. His town is looking for a way to survive the year due to a drought, and although Kim Chambong's house is full of rice and wealth, he doesn’t help the villagers. Wonbo sees his mother and daughter at home and resents the Kim Chambong’s family for taking his wife. The next day, a rumor spreads around the town that a robber broke into Kim Chambong's house and was arrested, and that the robber was Wonbo. Soon after, news spreads about Wonbo’s suicide in prison.

This story depicts the lives of poor peasants who lost all their farmland and became tenant farmers in the late 1920s. It provides a realistic portrayal of the conflict between landlords and tenant farmers as well as the lives of immigrants who had to leave their hometowns due to the conflict.

1927년 <현대평론>에 발표된 단편소설이다. 이 작품은 1920년대 후반, 농지를 모두 빼앗겨버리고 소작농으로 전락해버린 가난한 농민들의 삶을 묘사한다. 지주와 소작인들의 갈등, 그 갈등으로 인해 자신들의 고향을 떠나야만 하는 유이민자들의 삶을 사실적으로 묘사한다.
