Plot
At the tail end of Japanese rule in Korea, two young lovers, Shin Sucheol and Oh Sundeok, promise to marry each other. However, 18-year-old Sucheol suffers a gunshot wound after being forcibly conscripted and sent to fight on the battlefield, and he contracts leprosy. He is taken to Sorok Island, where leprosy patients are quarantined, and leads a wretched existence. Meanwhile, Sundeok leaves to work at a factory and earn money, but she is raped by a Japanese soldier and forced to become a sex slave.
