2016년에 출간된 김 숨의 장편소설이다. 작품은 위안부 생존자의 증언을 토대로, 그들의 삶이 지니는 역사적 의미와 인간으로서의 위엄과 용기를 다루고 있다. 작가는 위안부 생존자들의 부정당한 삶을 그들 자신의 증언을 통해 복원하고 재구성했다. 무책임한 역사와 현실정치의 기득권에 의해 훼손당한 생존자들의 개인으로서의 삶이 더 이상 방치되어서는 안 된다는 의무감에 의해 시작된 작품이다. 한편 이 작품은 그동안 한국문학이 잘 다루지 않았던 위안부문제를 소설의 주요한 대상으로 삼았다는 점에서 주목할 만 하다.

This novel by Kim Soom was published in 2016. Based on the testimonies of “comfort women” survivors, it provides a reconstructed account of their lives in their own words, portraying their dignity and courage and wrestling with the historical meaning of their lives. According to the author, the novel was born out of a sense of duty that the voices of the survivors – long neglected by history, and unfairly maligned – should no longer go unheard. It is worth noting that the subject matter is unusual for a work of Korean literature, which has not often dealt with the issue of “comfort women” in the past.
