General Yi Sun-sin is famed for his naval victories against Japan. Less is known, however, about the inner life of the man, or his struggles, when he faced the extraordinary challenge of having to lead naval battles alone, without any political support.

2001년에 출간된 김훈의 장편소설이다. 같은 해 동인문학상을 수상했다. 작품은 세계 해전사(海戰史)에서 유례를 찾을 수 없는 승리를 거둔 장군 이순신의 개인으로서의 삶과 공동체의 윤리를 다루고 있다. 특히 이순신이 책임졌던 전쟁에 대한 기록이 아니라 전쟁을 책임져야 했던 불안한 내면을 작가 특유의 섬세하고 정밀한 문장으로 그려내었다. 또한 역사적인 의무에 소홀했던 당시 조선의 정치인들을 비판하며 현재의 한국사회에 대해 질문을 던진다.

This novel by Kim Hoon was published in 2001 and won the Dong-in Literary Award the same year. It deals with the personal life and communal ethics of General Yi Sun-sin, who achieved naval victories unprecedented in the history of naval warfare. With delicacy and precision, the author portrays the uneasy inner life of the man responsible for the outcome of the Japanese invasion. Through its criticisms of the politicians of the period who neglected to perform their historical duties, the novel provides a helpful parallel, offering a critical view of present-day Korean society.
