- Korean War; the suffering of the nation; partisans; women’s lives
After her husband's untimely death, Shin Gilnyeo goes to live with her mother-in-law, but she is raped by the family's manservant, Cha Byeongjo. She gives birth to a baby who is secretly raised by Hwang Jeomgae and his wife. When her mother-in-law dies, Gilnyeo is again attacked by Cha Byeongjo, who forces her to perform laborious work at a tavern. With the help of Ji Sangmo, a truck driver, she is able to make her escape, but Sangmo rapes her and forces her to live with him in a mountainside inn, where she is entirely at his mercy. Then, by chance, she comes across Hwang Jeomgae, who is now a leftwing activist on the run. Sympathetic to his plight, she helps him escape after he is caught by the authorities. Soon, the war breaks out, and Gilnyeo returns to her parents' home, where she is met with cold indifference. Gilnyeo runs into Ji Sangmo again, but he likewise gives her the cold shoulder. Enraged for Gilnyeo’s sake, Jeomgae murders Sangmo. Unable to flee to the North with the retreating People's Army, Jeomgae becomes a partisan, and he and Gilnyeo become lovers. During a military operation, Jeomgae is shot and dies in Gilnyeo's arms.
